The Story of Indian Lake Golf Course

Like many good golf stories, Indian Lake Golf Course began with a simple idea, plenty of determination, and a belief that the game could be enjoyed in a more approachable way.

After building and owning Granite Springs Golf Course, the ownership group, including Stuart Down and Jim Durant, sold the property in 1988. Eager to begin another project, they turned their focus to creating a housing development on the Old Coach Road.

During the process of building the homes, a new idea came into play. With land available to them, the idea of creating a nine-hole executive golf course was born. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a shift was taking place in the golf world, particularly in the United States. Golfers were gravitating toward executive-style courses built primarily with par 3s and par 4s. These courses were easier to manage, quicker to play, lighter on the environment, and more affordable — without sacrificing the enjoyment of the game. This growing trend resonated strongly with James Durant, Stuart Dow and Ian Murray.

The journey officially began in 1991. What followed were years of challenges that tested patience and resolve. Securing government approvals and permits was a slow and often frustrating process, filled with revisions, delays, and countless conversations.

At the same time, acquiring financial support proved equally difficult. Executive-style courses were still a relatively noted concept in the region, and convincing lenders to support the idea required persistence, creativity, and an unwavering belief in the project. Financing came together only through determination, personal commitment, and the willingness to keep pushing forward when progress seemed uncertain.

By 1995, the major hurdles had finally been overcome. Land and permits were approved, and enough financial backing was in place to move ahead. Construction of the first nine holes began soon after, led by Dow, Durant and Murray. The work was hands-on and demanding, relying not only on vision and skill, but on grit, long hours, and problem-solving at every turn.

In August of 1997, Indian Lake Golf Course officially opened its first nine holes, offering golfers a course designed to be welcoming, playable, and enjoyable for all skill levels.

Encouraged by the response, work began on the back nine in 1999. Once again, all aspects of the design and construction were handled by James Durant and Stuart Dow. After three more years of trials, tribulations and dedication, the full eighteen-hole layout was completed in 2002.

None of this would have been possible without the many people who contributed along the way. Heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who participated in the construction of Indian Lake Golf Course — from the crews and tradespeople to the suppliers who believed in the project and were willing to help, often when support was hard to find. Their cooperation, flexibility, and commitment played a vital role in turning an idea into a reality.

Today, Indian Lake Golf Course stands as a testament to perseverance, community support, and a shared love for the game. Every fairway and green tells a story of hard work, collaboration, and the belief that golf should be accessible, enjoyable, and welcoming to all.
